YOURSAY | ‘Under Mahathir, it was Malaysia Boleh; under MO1, it’s Malaysia MIA.’

What ‘value propositions’ did M’sia get from Trump?

‘PM skipping UN meet again highlights 1MDB’s damage’

your say1yrsaynandtFellowMalaysian: Isn’t it obvious, Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong?

Attending the UN General Assembly and having to face the barrage of belligerent journalists from Wall Street JournalNew York Times and Washington Post will be a torturous time for PM Najib Razak when he is linked to the US Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation on 1MDB which is looking at possible money-laundering charges.

Keturunan Malaysia: PM, you may have other good reasons to skip the UN General Assembly for the second year in a row than the reasons we think.

But sadly, in your case, you have more than well touched the baseline of “guilty until proven innocent”.

Dont Just Talk: Under former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, it was ‘Malaysia Boleh’ but under Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) with the 1MDB albatross hanging around his neck, it is Malaysia MIA (missing in action).

Getting around the problem is easy and we just need to follow the example set by the recent MO1 visit to the White House – journalists not allowed to ask questions.

NNFC: At home, where all the authorities are scared to say anything, he looks like a brave man. Overseas, he can’t face them.

Anonymous 2362021442199789: Yes, he struts and preens locally but tries to shun the foreign press like a plague. A Malaysiakini reader commented that he is now a ‘kampung’ PM. Sad, but true.

Cash may be king but it does not buy one respect.

Malaysia4All: An astute observation by Liew. On the one hand, Najib talks about Malaysia being an integral member country that’s being taken seriously by the world, yet on the other hand, he dared not attend the UN meeting allegedly for fear of being questioned by the world media about his alleged involvement in 1MDB.

You can’t have it both ways, prime minister. Kleptocracy does not pay.

Annonymous: Najib unable to attend? No problem, Malaysia has very “competent” Umno “minister” who can make “outstanding” speeches in the UN. Watch his “great” speech here.

Hamzah Paiman: Najib should at least send Special Functions Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who seems to be more capable than DPM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (who addressed the UN last year).

Anonymous 2460391489930458: Too bad. Najib could have put forth another “value proposition” to the UN – that Malaysia will strengthen the economies of the entire world and feed all the hungry. That would make MO1 the pride of our country.

Clever Voter: On paper, one would have thought the UN forum would be an ideal place to re-engage with our international friends.

But Najib has his own agenda that includes a short celebration of his successful trip to the White House, but more importantly, the domestic announcement which turned out to be anti-climax.

Fair Play: When Najib visited the White House, I thought I read US President Donald Trump said he would see Najib again at the UN assembly and mentioned it would be an “exciting week”.

Perhaps now we know why Trump said what he said.

‘How was Najib misconstrued when he didn’t ask anything from Trump?’

Hamzah Paiman: It is quite disappointing to see US president looking like a Mafia leader with arms folded collecting protection money from a third world country.

He did not even promise anything in return to Malaysians.

Cascara: I can’t believe it. Najib went all the way to the White House spending our money and told Trump ‘I will give you this, this and that’ and return home.

Did Trump ask him for financial help? Why did he go there in the first place?

Anonymous_139278189925: Najib had his five minutes of fame. He didn’t foresee that the White House would release the video.

It was a real embarrassment for him. Stupidity has its own way of showing up.

PKR: So Mr PM, what did we get from the US?

Justice: Najib, your words “a strong value proposition” are now a postscript after stupidly pledging billions of ringgit of investment to strengthen the US economy and desperately trying to win Trump’s support.

Dont Just Talk: What MO1 got from US is a personal send-off by Trump, followed by a handshake and US president calling MO1 his friend, which made him so proud that he shared this information on landing at the KLIA airport.

Another great thing which happened at the White House was that journalists were not allowed to ask questions. Why?

Anonymous 247587149750034325: What did we get from the US? Nothing! But Najib got a handshake with Trump.

If Najib said we misconstrued him, isn’t that very clear he had not told Trump that ‘we help them and they must also help us’?

Perhaps Trump was too dumb to understand Umno’s language.
