‘Women should demand that Shabudin Yahaya resign as MP’

-TK Chua, April 5, 2017.

MPonrapeI commend Abdul Rahman Dahlan, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, for condemning the stupid idea that a rapist could escape legal responsibility simply by marrying his victim.

But I think, as a nation, all of us must take stronger measures than just criticising. For too long we have allowed moronic ideas to fester and thrive. It is time to rein them in.

I think it is time to demand that Shabudin Yahaya, the MP of Tasek Gelugor, resigns from his seat. He is not fit to be a leader, much less an elected MP. People like him are actually detrimental to the long-term good of this nation.

It is obvious this MP has his posterior in his head.

Marrying off a child rape victim to her attacker to solve a “social problem” is beyond logic and reason. It is perverted and depraved.

Even if we do not have specific laws preventing child marriage or a rape victim marrying her attacker, a rapist must face punishment first and foremost. If by marrying the victim could help to extricate the rapist from prosecution, are we not encouraging rape? Let’s rape first and marry later. What cruel tribal mentality is this?

To MP Shabudin Yahaya, marriage is a panacea that cures all problems. How could no one ever think of this great idea before?

You see, once a marriage takes place, a rapist would instantaneously repent and become a good person able to take good care of his victim (now wife). Similarly, all a rape victim needs is a husband, never mind that she was raped by him when she was a child. Once she is married to this rapist, she would have stable life and no uncertain future. I think Shabudin Yahaya deserves a Nobel Prize for ingenuity and social transformation.

All Shabudin Yahaya could see in a girl is her body. If she has a blossoming body, she is ready for marriage. It does not matter she is less than 12 year old. To him, physical maturity implies mental and spiritual maturity. This is the MP we count on him to make laws and advance social issues for this country.

Sometimes I think idea like this is not due to ignorance or lack of awareness. I think it is deliberate. They are deliberately trying to be tribal, obstinate, and archaic to further their own agenda so long as the victims are others’ daughters and granddaughters.

I think all women worth their salt should demand that Shabudin Yahaya resign as an MP.
