Are there only 39.5% Tamils in Tamil Nadu while Telugu people are about 41%?

Some people from Andhra are claiming that Tamil Nadu has about 40-50% Telugus. Is that true? They also claim that Tamil people comprise only about 39.5% of the total Tamil Nadu population! The below three pictures convey the same:

Thank you for A2A, I will answer this question once for all… in a different perspective

I am a telugu origin person from tamil nadu, we settled in tamil nadu during vijaya nagar and late pandiyan period after fall of kakatiya’s (14 to 18 th century). So i can answer this question with actual fact. I will answer this question in two parts 1. How Andhra media is giving a wrong facts to its people 2. what is mean by mother tongue 3.The real fact. (some brotherly advice, please don’t use Wikipedia for learning history, Wikipedia historians are killing the actual history most of them are amateur historian with strong regional sentiment)

Sorry for the long answer, it is very personal to me, becoz i was bombarded by this particular question often in my life.

Disclaimer – here,  when I use the term Andhrite,  it don’t mean everyone of them,  it just mean few ill informed people,  for the ease of typing,  I used to the word Andhrite,  so please don’t take it generally. Also this post not intended to troll Seem-Andhra people, it is just to show , how these media around them is giving them wrong facts. I myself have origin from Coastal region also this region has one of the fertile soil in india… living in KG basin of coastal itself the great gift to anyone… this is one of the best region on india in terms of culture and agriculture..

There is a widespread misnomer  and it is spread mainly by some of the TRP oriented telugu news channel (TV9, ABN telugu etc), also this is the false fact tied up with false propaganda..

Every one knows caste is nothing to do with the language, since caste is a social hierarchy based on job not language, yadav’s are there in all the languages, same with chetti’s.. there are telugu chetti and tamil chetti, tulu and kannada chetti… some of caste were counted both in telugu and tamil. What is the language of brahmin… There are all kind of brahmin…  Karnataka vokaliga’s are related to tamil Vellalar also they are related to telugu kapu’s and kamma’s.. Origin of every caste have interrelationship with other caste, like korava’s, Arundhathiyar, Yadavar, Viswakarma, Brahmin, and most other castes have the people in many langauge across many states, they no one language define them, most of the major caste fall in these in line… (It is funny that even in the 21st century, still we have to live with these caste nonsense)

Mother Tongue,  Can You Define…?

Before going to the analysis of each caste/linguistic group, let discuss who decided one’s language,.. how one person identify with the language. Definition of mother tongue is debate able.. there is no clear definition of mother tongue.. even study shows father and mother can’t force their children to learn a particular language, when it don’t add any value to them… it means father and mother have no rights to force the children their identity.. Some country define mother tongue based on, person confortablity with the language, so they consider their first language as a mother tongue (most of the western countries, that’s why united states, though major ethnicity are Irish, German, italian and anglican, but most identify their mother tongue as english not with their native language, but they keep their ethnicity as german, italian delinking the language with ethnicity)…some country define mother tongue based on ethnicity (e.g. singapore, malaysia..etc) , but scholar define mother tongue based on Pedagogical definition, which concentrate on comfortablity of the person with the language than language of their father and mother, so debate of language based divide is laughable.. E.g. assume a oriya kid settled in united states, if parents try to make their kids very comfortable with the oriya language, this will affect the kids attitude and comfortably with the outside english speaking society. Multilingual is the bless, but every one has a particular language which they can think also their thought process tuned to that language, this called tongue of that person irrespective of his ancestry..

2. History and Media Troll

After split of Telangana , there is widespread dissent in the Andhra region, we can equate this with the loss of east bengal for pakistan. To boost the moral and create the TRP bust these channels are spreading many wrong fact about Telugu number, also creating unnecessary divide.. Til the time coastal get into stable mood.. this exaggeration will continue…

I will try to give a explanation about the number… since  after pandya’s (14th century AD), tamils lost their major kingdom… Tamil region was dominated by many other language speaking kingdoms (mainly telugu, maratha’s , kannada and Nizam(nawab under them)). So greatest musician originated in those region , namely thiyagaraja, arunachala kavi, shyama shastri, though they originated in the core tamil speaking chola capital region (tanjore+tiruvaroor), but they wrote keertana in telugu, it is mainly because of kings being the telugu origin (like french ruling the british isles). Also most of the telugu people who settled during the vijaya nagar period got most of the land rights under them, so they were economical better of till 20th century than the tamils. So they are quite visible than other community.

I am from the community called reddiar (which called reddy in AP), AP news channel project around 70 lakhs reddiar in TN, but even so called our caste organization in tamil nadu put number under 10 lakhs..
I will give you the example of TV channels inflating telugu number

One telugu chennal went overboard to show that how telugu is a native language of sri lanka they confirm this by talking to one snake charmer, with out having any anthropological or archaeological evidence, without even talking about vedda anthropology they talk about vedda community… not just sri lanka they gone to most other countries to show telugu’s to AP people….  AP people are ill informed becoz these masala media news channels.. 1.

In this video the news channel quote 10 Cr people in AP+telangana and 8cr telugu speaking people outside AP+TL, both are very much wrong.. Old AP full population is 8.5 Cr (Including Urdu, Tamil, Kannada..etc), so this is the way to get their TRP..

Now Telugu TV channels starting new series of showing telugu people outside AP, they show everything which suit them, but never show some of the reality. They show how telugu people developing TN, but what they don’t show is, how telugu people occupied most of the tamil land, putting tamil’s as a daily wage employees and we created prosperous environment at the cost of locals.. not everyone but most of them.

if you want to see them go to Manaku Teliyani Mana Charitra in TV9… they quote everyone as telugu, most of the tamil and kannada channels won’t run these kind of program, becoz people living there don’t have interest in them, but there was a interest in coastal after split of Telangana……

They ran so many shows on it..

Here another under informed rant by some random TV guy… with much of emotion less of facts.

There are another news channel gives totally wrong details

3.Media Lie, Divisive Politics

Here is a an another example, how media can play a divisive role. This is how all the telugu channel reported Tamil Learning Act, which mandate all state board student/some CBSE school to teach compulsory tamil (though i may not agree wuith them fully), but most of the telugu channel reported in a TRP rhetoric saying tamil nadu govt banned Telugu,…Tamil nadu never banned telugu, it just said tamil also have to be learned as in andhra pradesh where student will learn Telugu+english and other language(in state board), since tamil nadu follow two language policy it can’t grade six subject, so it announced a person can study tamil as a language, and they can write other subject in telugu, also telugu as a third language as in AP, so these people will follow three languages, but due to 500 mark system, telugu won’t be graded. but other subject written using telugu will be graded (same policy followed in AP for tamils and kannadiga’s, since AP follow six subject policy all the subjects are graded).. but all telugu channel shown that TN banned telugu….. this is how you can attract viewers… details are devil for them.

But you will see these rhetoric mainly from people from andhra region, they irk most other people using their blatant statements like Andhrite developed chennai, Andhrite developed Hyderabad, now for Bangalore too.. (it puts effort of other community in the vein, it angers others), this shows the great region like andhra in a identity crisis.. also hypocrisy,  in AP telugu is dieing becoz of hindi and english, they try to enforce on other state… (now telangana govt converting most of the schools from telugu medium to english medium, AP region has most number of english medium school density than other southern region)

4. Fact Checking

There is a Three points were put up by the Telugu media and Andhrite (it is mainly with andhra region not with telangana)

1. These dravida parties inflated number of tamils, they register telugu’s as tamils

2. Most of the telugu’s were not given an opportunity to learn telugu, they are forced to learn tamil , so converting telugu to tamil

4. they point coimbatore, madurai, trichy, rajapalyalam for showing telugu dominated..

But all the three arguments are wrong.

For the sake of argument, lets goes to census done by British, where pre Dravidian movement at 1901 says old madras presidency

(Royala semma + Coastal Anhra, parts of Khammam, Tamil nadu, Ganjam of orissa, Tulu nadu, malabar region of kerala), it says 40% tamil speaking, 37% telugu speaking, based on the fact (of the question) 42% of TN is telugu at 2016, this number should be more than 60+% of telugu people in madras presidency at 1901, so blaming dravida party make no sense, also during British period number of tamil school is higher than telugu schools (based on demand)..Now do you think British are tamil fanatics…

5. Ground Reality – Telugu Origin People in TN (Virudhunagar Dt)

Lets talk about my story, i am from village in Virudhunagar district , my village has 35-40 % telugu origin people.. since we settled in TN around 500 years before, our village is connected by road during 1963, so before that transport is limited…school is constructed after 1953, so no schooling of tamil, but we followed tamil calender, even my mother uses tamil calender, not telugu, most of  interior TN , telugu people followed tamil customs due to natural assimilation even before DMK. It is not force, it is by choice and comfortablity. also telugu and tamil people have similar custom, so dividing them is the most stupidest activity one can do..

So effect of dravidian movement is not much…

Is my name sound anything telugu to you, do you think DMK is reason for my name, for that reason Dravidian movement was headed by Periyar who himself has kannada ancetry with telugu caste…these are the people now called as a tamil fanatics..

This is my village festival which is dominated by telugu origin people settled during 14- 15th century AD, do you think, it is becoz of dravida politics.. do you find any telugu here…

(Please fast forward first 1.5 minutes).. Music and our way of festival is not even close to any telugu custom..it follows south Tamilnadu custom….

Fast forward first 1.5 minutes…

Like many other southern tamilnadu villages, we do take Mulaipari for kali amman(picture is for representation purpose only)

Coimbatore has sizable telugu population, but they don’t form majority in Coimbatore city, but it was inflated due to their better visibility, it is like saying every tamil is either Iyer and Iyangar (when combined they just form less than 4% of TN population, it is because of their visibility people believe they form majority in TN) Coimbatore Naidu’s  settled before just two hundred years unlike interior telugu people who settled before 500-800 Years, so they still follow telugu custom, same case with border state due to closeness with AP and Karnataka…
Also now as per chennai is concerned repeated survey before and after indepedance shown Tamil majority, First CM of andhra Mr. Prakasm lost his deposit in north madras in 1952 election, he ran on the agenda of madras for andhra (he is the only one CM to loose deposit in indian history), so please don’t divide india based on this untrue facts, We went to TN as a migrant and we assimilated to that society, don’t divide us, we have so many problem to solve… not this one please..

Also do you think potti sree ramulu is a idiot to ask separate state for telugu people, because he felt madras state is dominated by Tamil’s, as per the question logic, it is the tamil people who should ask for separate state. Also Andhra is the first linguistically formed state in the independent India…

It is not that i hate Andhra people or Telugu language, I have Telugu ancestry, I can speak really good Telugu (becoz i was working in vizag). I am really proud to have Telugu and Andhra ancestry, but current rhetoric in AP is not encouraging, why do you want to create this kind of very wrong and sensitive fact about the neighboring state, which also has great ancient and historical past.

6. Caste Number, yes it reaches 200%,

Still, if you feel that telugu caste contribute around 42% of TN, Let surprise you with the claim of each major caste org in Tamil Nadu (i am only projecting major castes, so many minor caste are not mentioned), also non caste Christians also not mentioned to avoid confusion.. also , Asari/viswakarma, koravar, vettuvar,   vannar,  pandarm  and some MBC caste were left out in the list.. so  i am happy that we will soon end up in 200% Tamil Nadu…

Lets not go into any inflated data, lets just analyse the census data, as we know most of the dalits are tamil people, census says they form 20% of the TN population, also we have tamil speaking muslim (unlike andhra and karnataka where their muslim speak urdu, most of our southern muslim are like mappila in kerala, they speak tamil), so if you take half of the Muslim population, it touch 3%, we have around 4% Tamil brahmin, 1.1 % ST people, half of our Christians are non caste tamil speaking people, so if you add these census data, this itself comes around 30%, so as per this question logic of 39 % Tamil people in TN, it says all combined population of major tamil back ward (OBC) caste, Most Backward (MBC) caste, Denotified communities (DNT) are forming just 9% of TN population… oh my god , this is utter nonsense, because these communities are biggest in TN, how can you say combined population of all vanniars, goundars, pillai, mudaliar, nadar, maravar,  pandaram , kallar, vannar, ambalagarar , tamil kammalar/asari,  koravar, konar, vanniar, agamudiyar, Nagarathar form just 9% of TN population, when Tamil vanniar itself form more than 15% of TN population. Also Tamilnadu have strong OBC caste groups, strongest four are Mukkulathor, Tamil Vanniar, Nadar and Kongu Vellalar, even  very very conservative estimate put their combined population as more than 35% of TN population, this itself says that facts given in the question is wrong..  It is wrong in every sense… the above data is just relatively matchs with the old madras presidency data before independence (as shown in the map).. nothing close to any other data in 2016, even after adding all so called telugu caste people as telugu people, still it is very wrong. It like saying UNESCO selected Indian national anthem as a best anthem in the world…or it is like saying 35% nasa employees are indian, 30% microsoft employees are indian, 35% doctors in USA is indian, this fact given by MoS for MHRD Ms.Purandheewari (farmer MP from Andhra)  in parliament , but it is wrong… it is just a online spoof which our beloved MoS spelled in the parliament (actual number is <2% NSA emplyee have indian origin, same with micorsoft and doctors), but it went upto parliament (Indian mentality, accept everything without any question)… people believed without any reason.., the above fact also a spoof, which everyone is carry forwarding without any proof…

Though Tamil Region lost more people in three great famine during British era than any other region, but still 42% is way tooooo much.

Even adding, Telugu people, who identify themselves as Tamil, The number is not going to reach anywhere close to 42%, the best estimate can be put is around 10% (The best estimate)

You are so busted, do you… 🙂 Oh devuda…

7. Some final Uniting statement, to chill maadi

lets not divide our self, this is the time to unite  together, we have plenty of demon to fight (like poverty, child mal nutrition, infant mortality rate, caste system..etc), lets not create new demon.. Doesn’t matter, we live in TN, irrespective of our language, religion, we are part of tamil nadu, we are the people of tamil nadu, these telugu org with the identity crisis should refrain from divisive politics.. We are people of tamil nadu we are people of india, we are part of humanity…

If you are not satisfied with this answer, we have to do biological research, may be blood test which says which language that person belongs.. based on that we can actually find the exact number of telugu people in tamil nadu.  Origin of the reason lies in lower self confident and identity crisis

You may ask, why hell i collected this much data for these stupid facts, it’s becoz, I have been bombarded with this fact many a time, since i speak good Telugu( I studied in tamil medium Govt school and born and brought up in TN). I have many AP friends in the popular central govt institute, where i am currently pursueing my doctoral degree, some of the well educated AP friend always tell me this fact, Tamil nadu is actualy telugu dominant state not tamil. So i did lot of research to find out the truth (since I never accept anything without reference and fact).

Sorry for the typo,  I didn’t get much time to proof read,  will rewrite the same in the future
